My Childhood Web

This is my lovely family, besides my husband, the most important people in my life,
and all of them are in Mexico.

My mom & I

This is Margarita, my wonderful mom, she is one of the persons I most admire because she has been through hard situations in her life, and has never given up, and I feel so proud of her. She is very patient and always says that if you have to do something and don’t want to, you have to look for a stimulus so it can be easier; this is what she told me when I complained about ironing the clothes, and as any other mother, she is right.

She is my confident and has been always there for me, especially when I most needed her, supporting and advising me when she can, but always respecting my decisions. She taught me everything I know about cooking and baking, activities the two of us enjoy. I learned from watching her to be honest, respectful and patient. I remember some times when she went back to the store to give them back some extra money they had given to her by mistake, and of course, she sent us back too when that happened to me or my siblings.

Even though I am not physically with her I can feel her warmth, and I am always praying and looking forward for the day I can see her again.

My dad & I on my wedding day
This is Roberto, my dad, he is the other person I admire the most, because he has been a great dad despite his tough childhood, due to domestic violence. He has been my support since I remember, he told me about some consequences of any decision I had to make. I learned from him to think ahead, and look for alternative ways to face a situation.

When I was 5 years old my dad used to pick me up from kindergarten on his red field tractor, I felt so happy and wanted everybody to see me riding with my dad his huge red field tractor. Later on, because of the hard economic situation, he had so sell his planting fields, his farm animals and the lovely red tractor, and he started a new business with his brothers in another city. This decision put us farther away, and even though I was only 11 years old, I learned that sometimes we need to make hard decisions in order to get some benefits.

Every time I need to make an important decision I talk to my father and he helps me to see what I can’t from my perspective.

My sister Margarita & I
This is my oldest sister Margarita, and since I was little I used to follow her wherever she went. She said I was like her own child, and this idea didn’t always like her, because whenever she wanted to go with her friends I cried for her, and she felt guilty.

We still remember when I saw her eating junk food on the street, and she got typhoid fever. She told my mom she hadn’t eaten anything out of the house, but I said what I saw, I exposed her! She wanted to kill me with her sight.

I always wanted to be like her, because of her sense of responsibility, organizational skills and the dedication she puts on her chores. She is always motivating me to reach my goals by doing my best, and she has shown me that even in the hardest situations, nothing can stop us in life if we believe in ourselves.

My brother Roberto
This is my brother Roberto, he taught me to ride a bike and to park a car in a small space. Besides, he is the best handyman I have ever known. Just by watching him while fixing all kind of stuff in my parents’ house, I learned some helpful things, like installing or fixing some electronic devices or changing a flat tire.

One night, when I was 8 years old, I was about to grab a stick from underneath a low table, when my brother saw me he asked me not to touch it, that was a coral snake that got into the house. He asked me to bring him a broom and he killed right away.

Every time I saw my brother fixing anything, I asked him how he knew that was the way to fix it; he always said that he was focusing in the solution not the problem. I still keep those words in my mind, and they have helped me to face my responsibilities and hard situations.

My sister Judith & my mom
This is my youngest sister Judith, and she is like my best friend. She is very independent and always willing to help others when need it. When we were children, I wanted to protect and care about her, to defend her against anybody, but she didn’t need me, she was more independent than me.

Having her as my youngest sister, I learned that I need to respect the decision that others have made, and just stay around when they need me or ask me for help.

I remember a day we were so silly, just laughing a lot and with no reason that we got stomach ache (like after working out), and had no energy. My mom was so mad on us because we were not helping her in the kitchen.  I am lucky to have her as my sister.

Teacher Eloisa and my husband
Nun Eloisa was my teacher on 5th and 6th grade; these 2 school years are the ones I remember more about the Elementary school.

She was so lovely. Every single day she gave a compliment to each one of her students, and reminded us that we could do anything in our life with some extra effort. She just made me feel special with her words and attitudes.

Now that I am teacher I try to do the things she did to me, because I want the children have that beautiful feeling.

  2. Catalina, I loved reading your stories about your family! I also enjoyed your pictures! I couldn't figure out how to post pictures, any suggestions? My mother in law is the one that taught me how to cook, in fact she was just over for breakfast and she complimented me on my cooking skills. Well of course, because I got them from her! lol Reading the stories about your brother reminded me of my dad. My dad is a Automotive technician (mechanic), I like the professional term because I think my dad is a brilliant mechanic. In fact he has owned his own business for over 30 yrs! Do you ever go to Mexico to see your family?

    1. Hi Bernadette,

Of course I can give you some suggestion for pictures, and I go to Mexico every summer, sometimes we spend Christmas over there and we are planning to go this coming spring break, because we didn't go this last December.
